Kinky Friedman as President? Only in Geoff Marslett’s MARS

MARS is brought to Houston as part of the Texas Independent Film Network, a statewide coalition of film societies, universities and indpendent theaters united for the purpose of screening Texas independent film. Every month, TIFN takes a different movie on a circuit across the state – partnering up with local film organizations and theaters in each of its city stops.

Kinky Friedman as President? Only in Geoff Marslett’s MARS

Kinky Friedman may not have been successful in his bid to become Texas’ governor but in Geoff Marslett’s animated science fiction introspective odyssey MARS, Kinky plays the President of the United States.

In MARS, Marslett imagines a time four years into the future. NASA and the ESA are in a space race — attempting to be the first to reach that angry red planet in the sky, Mars. Leading the first manned American expedition is Charlie Brownsville, an arrogant astronaut with a chip on his shoulder played by THE LEAGUE’s Mark Duplass. Along for the ride are co-stars Paul Gordon, director and star of THE HAPPY POET, and Zoe Simpson.

As the trio head towards Mars, they find themselves up against all manners of inconvenience including life-threatening accidents, self-doubt, obnoxious reporters and that most terrible of all dangers — severe boredom.

Part science fiction film, part romantic comedy, MARS utilizes a visually arresting look developed specifically for the film that calls to mind a graphic novel's aesthetic. The movie explores the very nature of exploration — both into the fantastic unknown and the even more frightening introspective variety.

Don’t miss Marslett’s beautifully animated tribute to humanity’s curiosity. MARS will screen for one night only at the Alamo Drafthouse – Mason Park on Sunday, November 20.
