The Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Coen brothers' best picture winner with our latest Independent Film, Independent Brewery food and film event. Enjoy four delicious movie-inspired courses influenced by the Texas border region where the film is set. To keep everything within the great state of Texas, we will be pairing each course with fantastic offerings from Houston’s own Karbach brewery.

Scrubland Stew

With the movie’s protagonist being a West Texas rancher, we open with a soup inspired by the ingredients and influences of the region. This initial offering consists of tender braised Cabrito, a staple of the dry, harsh environment, in a savory black bean broth. The stew is topped with sour cream and served with a piece of sweet buttermilk cornbread to soak up the bottom of your bowl.

Rio Grande Salad

Inspired by the border defining river at the center of the story, the plate is split with a swath of roasted hominy and cucumber salad. It separates beer poached shrimp coated in Serrano glaze for a deconstructed shrimp cocktail, Tex-Mex style.

Busted Ribs and Smashed Potatoes

Llewelyn’s journey amounts to an epic beating that only seems to get worse with each twist in the plot. This course features food as beat up as the protagonist. Baby back ribs are rubbed, split, seared, and slow braised until the meat is falling off the bone. The broken ribs are tossed in a home-made Texas peach-chili reduction and served over hatch pepper and tarragon smashed red potatoes and a tangy jalapeño slaw.

Cake for Old Men

Just because the country is not for old men doesn’t mean the dessert can’t be. Chocolate cake is soaked overnight in the tres-leches tradition and served with tender caramelized plantains for a dish enjoyable by even the most tooth-challenged geriatric. Just like the movie, the final chapter of this feast is not overly sweet but leaves nothing to be desired.

The $5 ticket price will reserve your seat. At the end of the feast, you will receieve a bill for the remaining $35 plus tax.
