Join Badass Digest managing editor Meredith Borders for a screening of DIRTY DANCING this January

If there’s one thing Meredith Borders, managing editor of Badass Digest, knows – it’s that you never put Baby in the corner. This Thursday, Meredith will be hosting a special Girlie Night screening of DIRTY DANCING. The show starts at 7:30 PM and you can pick up your tickets here.

In advance of the screening, I sat down with Meredith to grill her on DIRTY DANCING and why she thinks it is an essential movie watching experience:

Do you remember the first time you saw DIRTY DANCING?

I do. I was in second grade and watching it with my big sister for the first of many, many times. I remember being vaguely confused by the pregnancy and abortion angle, but mostly I just tuned out the grown up stuff and waited for the dancing to start. (This is an approach I still use in life today.)

Why doesn’t Houston have a statue of Patrick Swayze yet?

That is such a good question! Obviously a Johnny Castle statue would be the dreamiest, but a Dalton statue would intimidate those other Texas cities that think they're cooler than we are.

Are there any important life lessons you learned from watching DIRTY DANCING?

So many! Baby Houseman taught me to be strong and opinionated and assertive, to care about every part of the world I live in, to fight inequality, to never make assumptions about those who are different or less fortunate. But most of all, she taught me to be brave enough to touch the butt of the incredibly hot dance teacher from the wrong side of the tracks and to do the mambo at the Sheldrake like nobody's watching.

What is your favorite lyric from Patrick Swayze’s “She’s Like the Wind”?

I'm partial to "She leads me through moonlight only to burn me with the sun," because that's pretty and nonsensical, but I always laugh at the line "Can't look in her eyes, she's out of my league" because NOBODY IS OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE, PATRICK SWAYZE. Nobody.

Is there such a thing as dancing that’s too dirty?

Personally, yes, because I tend to dance like a little German grandma at a church wedding, but for you crazy kids out there, no way. Dirty dance away! Shake what your mama gave you and whatnot.

Meredith Borders hosts DIRTY DANCING on Thursday, January 10. She’ll have a drinking game planned to play along with during the movie and plenty of other fun surprises in store. Follow Meredith on twitter at @xymarla and read her work at Badass Digest by click this link.
