In 2005 Joe Wright gave up-and-coming PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN star Keira Knightley her first major complex cinematic role in the director’s screen version of the Jane Austen classic PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. That film showcased Knightely and Wright’s talents to the world and was hailed as the best movie adaptation of Austen’s beloved novel. Knightley performance as the infamous Elizabeth Bennet earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Two years later Knightley and Wright worked again on the ambitious adaptation of Ian McEwan’s WWII-era drama ATONEMENT. The film solidified Joe Wright as one of Britain’s major exports into Hollywood and was nominated by the Academy for Best Picture and took home the top honor from the BAFTA Awards.
Now Knightley and Wright reunite for another lavish, complex and audacious adaptation of a literary classic. This time the source material is Leo Tolstoy’s classic ANNA KARENINA. The film opened today at our South Lamar location and you can watch the mesmerizing trailer HERE. The film co-stars Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and is written by the great and celebrated Tom Stoppard (ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE).
Critics are calling ANNA KARENINA “vibrant…a fierce devotion to beauty and detail" and singling out Knightley's work as "a nervy performance, acutely attuned to the volcanic changes a naive creature must enjoy and endure on her first leap into mad passion." The New York Times gave the highest of praise, declaring the film "risky and ambitious...The camera hurtles through the scenery as if in hungry pursuit; the lush colors of the upholstery and the costumes pulsate with feeling; the music (by Dario Marianelli) howls and sighs and the performances are fresh, energetic and alive."
But don't take their words for it, get swept up in the beauty, the romance and the maddening emotion that is ANNA KARENINA on the big screen. You can buy tickets HERE. (R.J. LaForce)
