At the Alamo Drafthouse, we delight in expressing our own natural obsession with the cinema in any way that we can. That is precisely why this Monday morning, 03/11, at 1:45 AM, we are hosting a ridiculously early morning screening of a film that you won't see anywhere else -- as far as film festivals go, it debuted at Sundance and recently played at the Berlinale, but you definitely won't find this on your SXSW schedule. The film in question is James Franco and Travis Mathews' eagerly anticipated INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR.
INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR. is James Franco and Travis Mathews' re-imagining of the lost 40 minutes of William Friedkin's CRUISING (1980). It is also a remarkably sincere exploration of sexual and creative freedom in contemporary cinema. INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR. manifests as a hybrid between documentary and fiction filmmaking, in particular due to its focus on the depiction of and/or narratives about gay sex in the 21st century. By using cinema as its primary source and attempting to recreate an excerpt of "lost film," Franco and Mathews shine light on William Friedkin's original film as a rich and deeply textual art object, showing how in hindsight it may serve as an important -- and perhaps critical -- window into meaningful dialogue about true-to-life issues, many of which divide the everyday spaces in which we live our very lives.
James Franco will appear in person to introduce INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR. and will also participate in a post-show Q&A. Be sure to have your questions ready afterward!
In other words, as Sunday night winds down and you exit the theater from your last SXSW screening, you'll be faced with a potentially life-altering choice. You can go home and rest up for the next day like a wimpy wet noodle or you can continue the time-eliding mega-party with all of us by seeing INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR. at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz at 320 E. 6th Street in the absolute beating heart of downtown Austin.
We will all be a little loopy by this hour, but we'll embrace the magic of it in order to watch an incredible new movie. Based on the success and tremendous fun of last Wednesday's TAR screening, we knew we just had to show another title before our special guest leaves town. Despite the short notice and the very early hour, I am personally beyond excited to share this film with the Austin film community. (Sam Prime)
