Critically Acclaimed Documentary ICEBERG SLIM: PORTRAIT OF A PIMP comes to the Ritz!

It's fitting that ICEBERG SLIM PORTRAIT OF A PIMP is such a straightforward title because its subject is a man who simply told it like it was. The film examines the tumultuous life of legendary Chicago pimp Iceberg Slim (1918-1992) and how he reinvented himself from pimp to author of 7 groundbreaking books. These books were the birth of Street Lit and explored the world of the ghetto in gritty and poetic detail and have made him a cultural icon. They quickly turned him into one of black literature's most influential writers.

The film is also filled with intereviews from many celebrities that were influenced by his writing and scholars fascinated with his work. Director Jorge Hinojosa also with an assured visual aesthetic. It's a film worth seeking out.

Critics have taken notice. Variety says it "intrigues and illuminates" and "abounds in the sort of ironies and contrasts that can make a biodoc fascinating even to auds totally unfamiliar with its subject." The Los Angeles Times calls it a "rich narrative...fascinating."

Slant Magazine proclaims that "Jorge Hinojosa wisely subverts Slim's mythos by pulling the curtain back on it in the doc's second half by revealing the man beneath."  And Entertainment Weekly applauds that "the movie fuses into a complex confessional portrait of pathology and redemption."

But don't take their word for it. Come see this incredibly entertaining, emotional and highly satisfying doc at the Ritz this weekend.
