Houston! Don’t miss THE VISITOR this weekend at your neighborhood Alamo Drafthouse

By the time this article is published, preview screenings of THE VISITOR, the latest repertory release from Drafthouse Films, are moments from beginning. The film, an insane blend of troubled ideas given birth under even crazier execution, plays for three nights only at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – Houston. You have until Saturday night to catch a movie that proved too much for the ‘70s to handle – as it is released in the US for the first time unedited and digitally remastered.

THE VISITOR is a 1979 horror/science fiction film from director Giulio Paradisi (under the pseudonym Michael J. Paradise) that combines aspects of THE OMEN, THE BIRDS and - perhaps - large chucks of the sacriments from certain out-of-this-world religions. Good battles evil in the streets of Atlanta, Georgia as an extra-dimensional savior plays a game of chicken with a demonic child with supernatural powers and a pet hawk with a taste for eyeballs. The film is a glorious quilt of madness – stitched together from homages to films such as CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and featuring a cast that includes such heavyweights as John Huston, Glenn Ford, Shelly Winters, Sam Peckinpaw, Franco Nero and Lance Henricksen.

How did a cheaply-produced, hastily written Italian horror film assemble such a cast – a cast that, mind you, includes a couple of cinema’s greatest filmmakers? For more info, read Zack Carlson’s Badass Digest article here.

In the article, Carlson (author of DESTROY ALL MOVIES) describes the film as “inarguably one of the most mind-altering cinematic experiences of the 1970s, a decade already synonymous with psychedelic and psychosexual celluloid.

“But this distinctly European skull-wrecker rises above, its unforgettable images and anomalous tone creating an entire world of godless insanity hurtling through the cosmos towards a frozen sun. The final product is disorienting, uncomfortable, misanthropic and a genuine masterpiece.”

The film is a real head-scratcher – but, all the same, a must-experience screening event. Watching the film with an audience is truly a revelatory experience – the movie will shatter senses, strip minds of sanity and cause spontaneous, oh-so-glorious, enlightenment. THE VISITOR is a truly once-in-a-lifetime film – a marvelous journey through filmmaking that straddles the line between artistic glory and commercial plagiarism. The movie functions like a half-remembered fever dream experienced after an all-night horror movie binge – you’ll go places minds were not meant to journey and you’ll come out either a stronger person or completely insane.

Do not miss your chance to experience THE VISITOR this weekend at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – Mason Park or Vintage Park.
