Houston! Don’t miss a screening of SPARKS with William Katt, Clint Howard and Ashley Bell live!

“When I was your age, we had to settle for STEEL and SPAWN and we liked it because that's all we were given!”

It’s been nearly 15 years since the modern age of superhero films was ushered in with the release of Bryan Singer’s X-MEN.  Over the last decade, the superhero film has gone from a sub-genre perpetually on the brink of disappearing (one failure and it’s all over, we used to say in hushed tones as we browsed the local comic book store) to a powerhouse of the summer film season that seems to be here to stay. Now that we’re elbow-deep into the reign of the superhero film, it’s time to start seeing what new and interesting things filmmakers can do with familiar trappings.

Christopher Folino’s SPARKS is an independently-produced film that mixes elements of superhero films, noir and horror to create a fun and interesting pulp story about a vigilante caught in a game of cat and mouse with a psychotic super-powered serial killer.

Join us this Sunday, March 23 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – Mason Park for a screening of SPARKS with co-director Christopher Folino and stars Ashley Bell (THE LAST EXORCISM), William Katt (THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO) and Clint Howard (EVILSPEAK) in attendance.

Chase Williamson (JOHN DIES AT THE END) stars as Ian Sparks, a young man driven by the tragic death of his parents to fight crime. Early into his career as a vigilante, Sparks forms a team with Lady Heavenly (Ashley Bell), a badass brawler who is equal parts crimefighter and pin-up queen. Together, the two work to clean up their city until their lives become irrevocably changed by a run-in with Mantanza, a sinister psychopath played by William Katt.

Despite a limited budget, Folino and co-director Todd Burrows do not limit their imagination. SPARKS features an impressive level of world-building. Fans of comic books “Astro City,” “Watchmen” and “Top 10” will appreciate the intense level of thought that Folino and Burrows have put into creating the world around their film. Hidden societies of superpowered crimefighters, legacy characters and decade-spanning origin stories are intertwined to create a story that will keep audiences guessing.

SPARKS features an independent spirit that is downright inspirational. Burrows and Folino have made a film that they should be proud of and audiences will get a kick out of. If you’re a fan of superhero stories and looking for something a little darker than your average cape and tights feature, consider SPARKS a must see. Especially as we present a can’t miss screening featuring members of the cast and crew. For $12, you'll have a chance to meet the cast and the crew and learn about the making of this new film.

We’re teaming up on this event with 8th Dimension Comics & Games. The cast and crew will be at 8th Dimension Comics & Games to sign copies of “Sparks,” the graphic novel that inspired the film. Following the signing, everybody will head over for a screening of the film at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – Mason Park. A Q&A will follow, moderated by Ain’t It Cool News’ Alan Cerny.
