For a generation of kids, Steven Spielberg was the ultimate babysitter. The filmmaker’s Amblin Entertainment production company was responsible for putting out some of the best-remembered, most beloved family films of the ‘80s. From E.T. to GREMLINS to BACK TO THE FUTURE, Spielberg’s production company is at the epicenter of any discussion about ‘80s nostalgia. Arguably sitting atop that tornado of good childhood memories is THE GOONIES, a 1985 family adventure film that starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin and Corey Feldman.
Created by a dream team of ‘80s Amblin Entertainment filmmaking, the movie was directed by Richard Donner from a script by Chris Columbus based on a story by Spielberg. THE GOONIES is about a group of childhood friends who find themselves on a great American adventure featuring pirates, mobsters, mutants and buried treasure. It’s the ultimate childhood wish fulfillment fantasy — a chance to experience something magical with a group of your closest friends.
We’re all big fans of THE GOONIES at the Alamo Drafthouse and that’s why we’re showing a high-definition digital presentation of the film all week for free at our Mason Park location. We’ve had a great run this summer with our Free Family Fun series but now it’s time to bid adieu to the summer and prepare for the coming advent of schoolwork and classroom blues. This week take a break from back to school shopping and bring the kids to the Alamo Drafthouse for an 11 AM screening of THE GOONIES through Friday. Just don’t blame us when your kids decide they want to go off and have one last adventure before school starts. Do feel free to share with us any pirate treasure they might find, though.
Even though the Free Family Fun series is ending this week, that doesn’t mean you won’t have any more opportunities to treat the kids to a free movie every now and then at the Alamo Drafthouse. Beginning September 17, we’re bringing the Alamo Kids Club to Katy. Every month, we’ll team up with Ain’t It Cool News and 8th Dimension Comics & Games to present a free screening of a classic family-friendly movie. We’re kicking things off with a 35mm screening of THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER. We’ll have more information up on the site soon but mark your calendar because this will be an event you won’t want to miss.
