Help support a Tugg screening of Fantastic Fest veteran MANBORG at Vintage Park!
We’re hosting a special sneak preview of the movie on Tuesday, April 2. Here’s the rub, though – 29 more tickets need to be purchased via Tugg (a site that offers crowd-funded screenings) before this event is confirmed. Do not miss your chance to see MANBORG on the big screen and celebrate the latest victory from Astron-6.
If you’re a fan of genre cinema and you have not heard of Astron-6 yet, you are in for a treat. A team of filmmakers based out of Canada, a country as magical and mysterious as Narnia to us Texans, Astron-6 has been putting out short films for a few years now – constantly one-upping themselves with movies that never let budgets restrict them when it comes to stretching their imagination.
Astron-6 is all about celebrating ‘80s genre films – whether through their short film COOL GUYS that builds from a typical summer beach party plot to become something truly dark and disturbing or the feature-length film FATHER’S DAY in which hyper-violent horror is mixed with silly, often surreal humor.
This April, Dark Skys Films will release Astron-6’s MANBORG, a short but very sweet film that is probably the group’s most ambitious movie to date. Steven Kostanks’ low-budget sci-fi comedy is satire for the YouTube generation. A 60-minute absurd spoof of ROBOCOP (among other things), Kostanks’ film stars Matthew Kennedy as a fallen soldier brought back to life as a cyborg to fight the demon hordes that have overrun the Earth in a nightmarish dystopian future full of CGI, Street Fighter rejects and stop-motion demons. The film may be short in running length but the humor is packed into the film like an overweight woman in cheetah print stretchy pants. If TETSUO: THE IRON MAN made sweet love to a Sega Genesis console, Manborg would be the bouncing baby born.
Here’s the official plot description:
The armies of Hell have taken over the Earth, and all that stands in the way of the villainous Count Draculon and humanity‘s total extinction is a motley crew of misfits led by the mighty MANBORG: a warrior who‘s half-man, half machine, but all hero. Once a young soldier killed during first war against Hell, Manborg reawakens in the future, rebuilt as a walking weapon and mankind‘s last hope. Struggling to learn the secret of his origins, Manborg unwittingly befriends a post-apocalyptic Australian punker, a knife wielding vixen, and a kung-fu master before finally squaring off against Count Draculon in a desperate and bloody bid to take back the Earth.
