Greet the Gilmore

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Kalamazoo is excited to welcome the 2014 Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, which kicks off today throughout west Michigan. Check out the Festival schedule here.

In honor of the festival, we'll be presenting a slate of musically themed movies during the two weeks of the Gilmore -- and we will be sponsoring the May 5 concert by the Greg Spero Trio at W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek.

The movies begin rolling out this weekend, starting with THE 5,000 FINGERS Of DR. T, at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26. This otherworldly fantasy marks a rare live-action adaptation of a Dr. Seuss story: In 1953, the celebrated author created this wild tale of a little boy (Tommy Rettig of "Timmy and Lassie" fame) who hates piano lessons and daydreams that his severe teacher (Hans Conried) is a super-villain, ruling over a sinister musical wonderland.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, we're presenting AMADEUS: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT, which restores 20 minutes of previously unseen footage to director Milos Forman's Oscar-winning drama about the brilliant but unstable Mozart (Tom Hulce) and his rival, the insanely jealous Salieri (F. Murray Abraham).

The following weekend, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Kalamazoo is thrilled to present the local premiere of SING-ALONG-A SOUND OF MUSIC, which regularly sells out its shows in Ann Arbor, Royal Oak and Chicago. More than a screening of the 1965 Julie Andrews classic, this is a fully interactive experience, including a costume contest, games and all the proper props you need to "climb every mountain." Our shows will be hosted by Alamo favorites Lori Moore and Rod Cone. SING-ALONG-A SOUND OF MUSIC is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. May 2, 3 and 4.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Kalamazoo sponsors the Greg Spero Trio concert at noon on May 5 at W.K. Kellogg Foundation in downtown Battle Creek (Spero will also perform at noon May 6 at the Civic Auditorium in Kalamazoo). A native of Highland Park, Ill., Spero won the 2013 Best Jazz Entertainer honor at the Chicago Music Awards. His style incorporates elements of jazz, hip hop, fusion and electronica.
