I’ve had the time of my life … and I owe it all to you, babe. There are movies that are milestones in a person’s life. You see them at just the right age, at the right moment, and you can never go back to the person you were two hours before. For a lot of women, DIRTY DANCING was that movie. It was an awakening that taught many an impressionable young mind about love, sexual tension, and how great a guy like Patrick Swayze looked in tight jeans.
DIRTY DANCING is the coming-of-age tale of Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), who is making her parents proud with her responsible academic plans. She joins her affluent family in their usual vacation spot in the Catskills, and settle in for a quiet, pre-college vacation. But Baby has been such a good, hardworking young woman that she’s never gotten to explore that wild side. When sexy dance instructor Johnny Castle (Swayze) saunters by, and shows her how to mambo, Baby’s world is rocked. There’s misunderstandings, secrets, fights, and lies, but none of that matters once Baby and Johnny hit the dance floor.
The film opened to positive reviews – The New York Times amusingly called it a “a metaphor for America in the summer of 1963 – orderly, prosperous, bursting with good intentions, a sort of Yiddish-inflected Camelot” – but most importantly, it was a massive hit with audiences. DIRTY DANCING was one of the biggest this of 1987, and became the first film to sell a million copies on VHS.
But even if you owned one of those VHS tapes, and bought it again on DVD, and couldn’t resist owning it again when it hit Blu-Ray, it’s time to experience it on the big screen again. DIRTY DANCING comes to the Alamo Drafthouse Littleton on April 10 at 7:00pm as our very first Girlie Night screening.
Girlie Night is a recent addition to the Drafthouse event line-up, and the female companion to our Tough Guy Cinema series. (However, you’d be surprised at just how many men are confident enough in their masculinity to come along and watch “chick flicks”!) Girlie Night an event that's all about watching it with your girlfriends – even those in the theater you haven’t even met – and you’re welcome to sigh, cheer, clap, cry, and squeal at all your favorite moments. If you want to whistle at Patrick Swayze’s mamba, or do a bit of chair dancing along with the music, this will be the screening where we won’t ask you to stop.
Our full food and drink menu is available for every Girlie Night. This is an evening about indulging yourself, so take advantage of all our pizza, burgers, shakes, hot cookies, and adult beverages. Order whatever catches your fancy by writing it down on one of our order cards, folding it up, and sticking it within the metal rail on your table. Our team of secret servers will be along to collect it, and have your food out to you before you can sing the first line of “She’s Like the Wind.” And they will never, ever drop the bill in the middle of a big dance number.
If you’re really eager to get to your seat (and who wouldn't be on a night like this?), you can also order alcoholic drinks right at our ticket booth, and carry them inside with you, so you can get sipping before the first Swayze scene.
And remember, Girlie Night can be any night if you take advantage of Glass Half Full, our cozy corner bar that was made for you and your girlfriends to meet up, reminisce, or commiserate over affairs with dance instructors. You never need a movie ticket to visit Glass Half Full, and our full Drafthouse menu is available inside, so you can order up some chips and dip whenever the mood strikes.
Tickets for our April 10 Girlie Night: DIRTY DANCING event are on sale now. Don’t put Baby in the corner by waiting to buy yours.
