Alamo Drafthouse and The Academy present: Saul Bass Shorts and PHASE IV (new 35mm print!) on 12/01!

Drafthouse partners with The Academy for Saul Bass events, feat. PHASE IV and long-lost ending!

On December 1st, 2012, we welcome our friends at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Academy Film Archive to our hometown of Austin to present two special events focused on the legendary, iconic title sequence designer and director Saul Bass. The Academy is committed to long-term preservation and exhibition of moving images, not least of which includes the various titles from the extraordinary Saul Bass Collection, a recent and major acquisition for the institution. Our first event in partnership with The Academy is an afternoon of Saul Bass shorts, featuring everything from short films to Bass’ corporate design work to documentary excerpts of Saul Bass speaking about his life and work. Our second event is an incredibly rare screening of Saul Bass’ sole feature film directorial effort, PHASE IV (1974), for which The Academy has made a brand new 35mm print, as well as an HD digital transfer of the long-lost (and marvelously psychedelic!) end sequence. Trust us, we are as excited about this as you are!

It is entirely our pleasure to celebrate the bold, extraordinary restoration work that The Academy regularly performs with these two special screenings. For more information, please see the below press release and get excited to join us by watching the PHASE IV trailer as we celebrate Saul Bass at the Drafthouse!
