Making its local premiere during the Houston Comedy Film Festival, JUST LIKE US explores comedy as a universal language.

Comedian Ahmed Ahmed makes directorial debut with documentary JUST LIKE US

Comedian Ahmed Ahmed was born in Egypt before his parents immigrated to the United States when he was only a month old. When making his directorial debut, Ahmed decided to explore the misconception held by many that Arabs have no sense of humor. Gathering a team of some of the top comedians working today — including Tom Papa, Whitney Cummings, Tommy Davidson and more — Ahmed embarked on tour of the Middle East. Stopping in places such as Dubai, Lebanon, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, Ahmed's comedy tour was an ambassadorship of sorts and — for the purposes of the film — an exploration into humor as a universal language.

JUST LIKE US sets out to prove that comedy can cross all borders and humor can be one of the best ways to build cultural bridges. A cross between a video diary of the tour and an exploration into the current state of comedy in the Middle East, Ahmed's film is a funny, informative take on a sometimes touchy subject.

JUST LIKE US will screen for a week at our Houston area Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas — premiering in conjunction with the Houston Comedy Film Festival. For full days and showtimes, visit the event page here
