This December, celebrate Peter Jackson the horror movie director with THE FRIGHTENERS and DEAD ALIVE

This December marks the 10th anniversary of Peter Jackson's adaptation of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS. This month will also see the release of THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, a new animated movie directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson. These movies are fun and all but do you remember the days when Peter Jackson was directing horror films? The Graveyard Shift sure does.

Join the Graveyard Shift, Houston's premiere horror movie series, for a December double feature celebrating the horror work of Peter Jackson, a man who desperately needs to leave the hobbit shire and return to the world of gore.

First up is THE FRIGHTENERS, a film that is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary. Starring Michael J. Fox, THE FRIGHTENERS was originally slated to be the first film in the theatrical "Tales from the Crypt" series (any other fans of DEMON KNIGHT out there?) but it was decided it would be released as its own monster. The film stars Michael J. Fox as Frank Bannister, a cynical ghost hunter who secretly secures business for himself by sending his ectoplasm endowed best friends to haunt houses. When he gets involved in the supernatural serial killings of a deadly ghost played by Jake Busey, Bannister must rise to the occasion and become the hero he's spent his adult life pretending to be. We'll be screening a digital presentation of the director's cut.

Following THE FRIGHTENERS, we'll screen DEAD ALIVE (or BRAINDEAD as it is known around the world) - one of the goriest zombie movies you've ever seen. Shot in New Zealand in 1992, DEAD ALIVE features everything you could hope for in a monster movie — sumatran rat-monkeys from Skull Island, zombie sex, resulting zombie babies and one of the bloodiest examples of dispatching a horde of zombies ever caught on film. We'll screen DEAD ALIVE from a 35mm print courtesy of Lionsgate.

If you're a fan of horror films or have never seen the darker side of Peter Jackson's filmography, this is the perfect chance to do so. More than just a simple screening, this evening will be a full-fledged event. Rotten Cotton will be on hand to give out some of their shirts as prizes. We'll also have a few games to mark the occasion. This December, dropkick a hobbit and make your way out to a celebration of the real Peter Jackson, the filmmaker who once made a movie about muppets with AIDs.

December 17 @ 8 PM — West Oaks
