Catch a 35mm screening of NEAR DARK this Saturday at Mason Park for only $5

In 2010, Kathryn Bigelow made history when she became the first woman to receive an Academy Award for Best Director for her work on THE HURT LOCKER. Since beating her ex-husband James Cameron and his film AVATAR, Bigelow (who also directed the classic POINT BREAK) has had her pick of projects – her name being linked to multiple notable projects over the last few years. No matter how much success and adoration from movie fans Bigelow will come to enjoy, she was already a hero to horror fans for her 1987 film NEAR DARK.

Written by Eric Red (THE HITCHER, BAD MOON), NEAR DARK is the country-fried vampire film that brought the vampire genre back down to earth and, alongside THE LOST BOYS, is responsible for helping to reinvent bloodsuckers during the ‘80s – bringing them out of the dusty gothic landscape they had lived in during most of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Instead of cloaks and medallions, hearses and castles, Bigelow’s vampires wore cowboy boots, drank cold beer and rode around in a beat up RV. They were badass mofos with fangs as long as their attitudes were bad.

NEAR DARK stars Adrian Pasdar of “Heroes” as Caleb Colton, a young man living in a small town whose world gets turned upside down when he’s bitten by a vampire. Transformed into a member of the undead, Caleb is taken in by a clan of vampires led by Jesse – played by the irreplaceable Lance Henriksen.  Henriksen is joined by his ALIENS co-stars Bill Paxton and Janette Goldstein.

For those that want a break from the goofy gothic vampires of DARK SHADOWS or the love-drenched glittery romance of the TWILIGHT films, NEAR DARK is the prefect reminder of why vampires are so badass. From Paxton’s howl-at-the-moon performance to the sand-swept, shit-kicker personality of the film itself, NEAR DARK is a Texas horror movie through and through –even if it wasn’t set or in Texas.

“Howdy. I'm gonna separate your head from your shoulders. Hope you don't mind none.”
