In one week, the award-winning BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD opens at our South Lamar location!
As the much-celebrated indie darling of both this year's Sundance and Cannes film festivals, Benh Zeitlin’s feature filmmaking debut, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, has unquestionably been the most eagerly anticipated title around the Alamo Drafthouse offices. Now that we are only a week away from its opening at our South Lamar facility, we could not be more excited to share this magical, eye-opening film with you, our audience. You don't want to miss this one. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is truly one for the books!
Like all those who love movies, we can sense when a film as deeply resonant and powerfully affecting as BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD comes along (all too rarely these days) and so we are jumping at the chance to showcase this special, unique feature in our theater. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s Todd McCarthy calls BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD “One of the most striking films ever to debut at the Sundance Film Festival” and we are inclined to agree. THE A.V. CLUB’s Noel Murray emphatically writes that it is “like a live-action Miyazaki film, with DAYS OF HEAVEN narration." Noel, you had us at “Miyazaki.” We at the Alamo Drafthouse have a great deal of love for this film and we know that you will feel the same.
BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is an imaginative story of magical realism set in the world of the Bathtub, a fictional, rural Louisiana community. Hushpuppy, the film’s six-year-old protagonist and narrator, serves as the eyes and ears of the audience. She is the innocent, unassuming vessel through which the audience experiences the heartbreak caused by the onset of a sudden, cataclysmic storm that ravages the Bathtub and its denizens. To say any more would be to spoil the breathtaking surprises that BEAST OF THE SOUTHERN WILD’s narrative has in store for our audience members with a distinct appetite for adventure.
A dreamlike, fantastic film that has seduced audiences around the world – us included! – “BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is hauntingly beautiful both visually and in the tenderness it shows toward the characters, who live on the edge and perhaps somewhat in Hushpuppy's head.” (Manohla Dargis, THE NEW YORK TIMES). The wise beyond her years Hushpuppy imaginatively compares the universe to an elaborate jigsaw puzzle, “I see that I am a little piece of a big, big universe, and that makes it right.” Why not ome over to our place and be a piece of the big, big universe? Come see BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD next week!
BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD opens on Friday, July 13th, 6:30pm, at South Lamar. (Sam Prime)
