Celluloid Handbag Presents: ALL ABOUT EVE! w/ Rebecca Havemeyer Live!
This Wednesday, February 23, at 7:00pm @Ritz.
Joseph L. Mankiewicz's ALL ABOUT EVE is, without a doubt, one of the top films in history. The laurels and praise it's received over the years are too many to list, but here are just a few amazing marks of recognition: It was nominated for a record-smashing 14 Academy Awards, the most ever (tied with TITANIC, but EVE beat the boat by 47 years). It won 6 of 'em, including Best Pic. It was the only film to receive four female acting nominations (Bette Davis and Anne Baxter as Best Actress, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter as Best Supporting Actress). It was inducted into the National Film Registry the second year of the Registry's existence, signaling its high priority as one of our nation's most treasured motion pictures. It was the major inspiration behind SHOWGIRLS, the best stripper drama ever to grace the United States. The list could go on, but you get the point.
You can see that this thing is a tour-de-force of acting and a masterpiece of witty storytelling with an epic arc. But did you also know that it's a monument to egotism and nastiness? That Bette Davis and Anne Baxter go after each other during this movie like two tabbies after a single tin of sardines? Ain't nobody ever scowled like that Bette Davis, and in ALL ABOUT EVE she's at her most scowlicous.
Our favorite friend, Rebecca Havemeyer, will be on hand to host this special CELLULOID HANDBAG presentation of ALL ABOUT EVE. She'll be here in all of her singing and dancing glory, ready to, as she says, "dish out tha’ dirt and skirt tha’ crowd through a pre-show full of spectacular awards, special guests, and more ravings and rants than BETTE DAVIS on a bad day!" She's even secured an interview with the supreme hellcat herself. Check out this little tease:
