We are excited to debut our interactive display and photo opportunity in the lobby of our newest New York theater in Yonkers! As a nod to the classic nuclear bomb scene from the film DR. STRANGELOVE, we have stationed a warhead replica in the lobby. Movie-goers are free to climb onboard and mimic Slim Pickens’ iconic ride from the film, complete with a cowboy hat. To add a local touch, we've targeted our theater as the backdrop - watch out Yonkers! To make this a photo that replicates the scene as much as possible the theater encourages visitors to set their filter to black and white and wave the cowboy hat appropriately (making faces is also encouraged). You can view lots of great bomb examples here. After taking the ride of your life, you can post your photo to your favorite social media websites like Instagram and Twitter using #alamobomb or @alamoNYC.
The sculpture was first inspired by the upcoming Drafthouse Films release, THE CONGRESS, which references the memorable scene from DR. STRANGELOVE. THE CONGRESS follows an avatar of actress Robin Wright, played by herself, who becomes a science-fiction movie star. In a nod to DR. STRANGELOVE, one of her hits has a scene where she rides a nuclear bomb to earth.
In honor of the sculpture, we will be screening DR. STRANGELOVE: OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVED THE BOMB on August 17th and 18th at 4pm. You can grab tickets here.
The bomb was fabricated by Austin’s own Jay Gordon of Blackout Signs.
